Find out what will happen, and when

The transition from IPFW to IU Fort Wayne and Purdue University Fort Wayne is expected to be complete as of July 1, 2018.

  • When will the changes take place?

The agreement and realignment plan, which became effective immediately upon approval of the respective boards of trustees in December 2016, ensures that all necessary elements for a successful transition are being addressed to satisfaction of the respective Boards of Trustees including, but not limited to, sufficient funding from the state legislature; and reaching concurrence on the terms of the ancillary agreements between IU and Purdue that address items such as general education courses offered to the IU health sciences students on campus, the provision of student services, and the management and operation of facilities. Ancillary agreements were entered into in June 2017, to be followed by a transition period of one year. The effective date of the realignment is July 1, 2018.

  • What happens next?

All efforts have had at their core how best to provide for the educational interests of the region and the economic growth of northeast Indiana. IPFW faculty and staff have been working in good faith with the parent institutions since the LSA study was released in January 2016 by providing information and data. This information sharing will continue as plans move forward to realign the mission areas on campus. Purdue University will conduct an immediate analysis of potential new programs in both STEM disciplines and the humanities that will attract new students and position the campus for a strong and successful future. As President McRobbie and President Daniels have stated, the plan has been designed to create a seamless experience for both IU and Purdue students on campus through course availability, the delivery of student services, and the use of campus facilities.

  • What is the timeline for approvals and accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission?

The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, an independent organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States, must approve of the major institutional changes that result from the realignment. Change applications were submitted to the commission by July 31, 2017. The commission will schedule a site visit to the Fort Wayne campus in fall 2017. They will vote on approval at their February 2018 meeting, with a decision expected in March 2018.

  • How long will all of these changes take?

The realignment effective date is July 1, 2018. The full transition for current students as they complete their degrees may take through June 30, 2021.

  • Will IPFW keep its existing name?

At its April 2017 meeting, the Indiana University Board of Trustees approved the name of Indiana University Fort Wayne for its health sciences programs effective July 1, 2018. The Purdue University Board of Trustees also approved a resolution to designate Purdue University Fort Wayne as the new name for the campus.
