IU School of Nursing welcomes new associate dean to Fort Wayne campus

Indiana University School of Nursing has appointed Christopher Lance Coleman, PhD, MS, MPH, BS, AS, FAAN, PMHCNS-BC, as the inaugural associate dean of IU School of Nursing - Fort Wayne. His appointment begins July 1, 2018. In this new leadership role, Dr. Coleman will be responsible for the administration, teaching, and scholarship activities of IU School of Nursing - Fort Wayne.

I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, and students at IU School of Nursing - Fort Wayne and I know that we’re going to do great things together,” said Dr. Coleman. “IU is the place to be and Dean Newhouse has a national reputation as a strong leader and wonderful mentor. I couldn’t be more pleased to join the team.”

Dr. Coleman is currently professor and chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, College of Nursing, in Memphis, Tennessee. Prior to that, he spent 13 years at the University of Pennsylvania where he served as co-director for the Center for Health Equity Research. His program of research, focused on health equity, involves spirituality, meditation and religion and its effect on men aged 50 and above with AIDS. In addition to teaching and mentoring, he champions diversity on campus and has received two national awards for his programs. He was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2007.

Dr. Coleman received his bachelor’s degree from Walla Walla University, College Place, Washington, and a Master’s of Science, Family and Child Psychiatric Nursing, from Oregon Health Sciences University School of Nursing. In 1996, he earned his PhD from the University of California San Francisco School of Nursing followed by post-doctoral training.

Not only will he make a wonderful first associate dean of the IU School of Nursing - Fort Wayne, Chris will serve as a great partner for the Fort Wayne community. Established in 1914, IU School of Nursing has been empowering leaders in practice, research, education and service for over 100 years. Ranked 12th among public schools and colleges of nursing for National Institutes of Health funding, the School boasts a robust program of research focused on quality of life in chronic illness, nursing education and behavioral oncology.
