Indiana University School of Medicine’s Public Health Student Interest Group (SIG) is hosting its fourth annual Trunk-or-Treat fundraiser Wednesday, October 30, from 6-8 pm in Parking Garage 3 at the IU Fort Wayne/Purdue Fort Wayne campus. All proceeds raised will go to the Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana, Inc.

“Halloween is all about fun, but we also wanted it to be about wellness,” said Jasmin Sanchez, president of the Public Health SIG and second year medical student. “There are plenty of people in the Fort Wayne community that need help, especially when it comes to food and nutrition. The Community Harvest Food Bank makes a huge impact in tackling hunger.”

This yearly event is open to the public, and will feature classic games such as corn hole, a witchy ring toss and more. Each stop will also have goodies for attendees. Admission for entry is $10 a family, $4 a child, or six cans of food. However, any donation is welcome and no one will be turned away from participating. Each car will be decorated with a Halloween theme. Themes in years past include Harry Potter, M&Ms, and Disney’s UP.

“All of us that are decorating our cars for this year’s Trunk-or-Treat are medical students at IU Fort Wayne’s campus,” said Grant VanNess, vice president of the Public Health SIG and second year medical student. “We have dedicated our lives to serving communities and educating members on wellness. This is just good practice so we can be better, and more personable, physicians in the future.”

Last year, over 20 trunks participated. The event attracted 250 people, and raised $300 and 295 pounds of food that was donated to the food bank. This year, students hope to raise $500 and 500 pounds of food to be collected and gifted to the Community Harvest Food Bank.
